SAP is an originally German software house, founded in 1972 and located in Walldorf near Heidelberg. SAP was founded by a number of former IBM employees. The company is the fourth largest independent software company in the world. SAP helps companies with the optimization of enterprise software. This includes, among other things, the supply chains and business processes, which keep them competitive. In 2016, there were around 81,000 SAP employees, distributed across more than 130 countries.
The acronym SAP stands for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte (Systems, Applications, and Products). Originally at the establishment of the company, it was SystemAnalysis und Programmentwicklung.
In 2013, SAP AG (Aktiengesellschaft, AG) changed its legal name from a German company to a European company, SAP SE (Societas Europaea, SE).
The company is listed and is part of the German DAX stock index. The founders of the company held about 19% of SAP’s shares by the end of 2016.
Since 2003, SAP for the SME segment has two solutions: SAP Business One and SAP Business All-in-One. SAP Business One focuses on SMEs with 1 to 100 employees. SAP Business All-in-One from 75 employees. At the end of 2007, SAP launched the SAP Business ByDesign product. This SaaS solution fills the SAP product range for the SME segment.
