The site is particularly popular with women (about 80% of users). The creator of Pinterest is Ben Silbermann. The site is hosted and managed by Cold Brew Labs, based in Palo Alto, California.

Initially you could visit the website only if you had an invitation but later registration via email is also possible. In August 2012 it became possible to register for free without getting an e-mail invitation.

Pinterest users can create their own mood boards. In this mood boards they can place images from across the web that are placed through the Pin it button. Each pin (pin) gives a picture, video or article again. These pins are grouped by the mood boards that the user may wish to create and organize.
The social aspect of the site is that it basically mood boards are public and therefore can be followed by other users. There is also the possibility that other users perform a repin. This they place the articles they find on other users on their own mood board.
